Mykonos Town
Mykonos town, or Chora, is the capital of Mykonos and the place where you will find essential landmarks, popular bars, restaurants, and the most fashionable shops of the island.
The town’s architecture is of typical Cycladic style, with white-washed cubic houses adorned with bright blue doors and windows, quaint cobble-stoned narrow streets and all-white chapels with impressive cupolas. While in the Chora, you should visit the church of Panagia Paraportiani, the Town Hall and the Castle, rising above the harbor. Other worthwhile sights, to take in a little history, are the Archaeological, Folklore and Maritime Museums. A stroll through Chora, the old port, Little Venice, the windmills and the Castle, will acquaint you with the genuine spirit of Mykonos town.
The distinctive white windmills of Mykonos have been a notable sight of the island since the 16th century. There used to be a total of 20 windmills on the island, most of them built in Mykonos town, the port, and “Little Venice” district; Today only 7 are still standing, as nostalgic reminiscent of the island’s history. On the east side of the harbor, there lies one of the most picturesque places in Chora; Alefkantra, also known as Little Venice, a mid-18th-century neighborhood where captains and merchants built their mansions dolling them up with colorful balconies, that hang over the waves, and pretty windowpanes. Little Venice is a very romantic district, ideal for admiring the scenery with your significant other, as the sun sets in the horizon.
